Sims Castaways Help

I am stuck in an early "goal" of my sim. I am trying to get a date for the hot spring festival, but every time I try to "call" another sim, nothing happens (or I get a "Hi! This is my answering machine!" message). Am I doing something wrong, or is there just a bug in the mac version of this game?

Calling another sim while they're at work could explain the answering machine. If you aren't trying to contact them during the day, then it may be a bug.

I'm guessing it's a bug then? I've been trying to call at all hours of the day (and night).
