SOLVED Removing pics to free up space

Hi all, I would love to remove pics from Photos but when I select and hit delete I get a message saying if I delete then I will be deleting from iCloud and all locations/devices the pics are on.
I would like to keep the pics on iCloud, I only want them off my MacBook Pro in order to free up some space ( about 2500 pics and 10GB.)
I have copied the pics to several flash drives and have copied to an external hard drive.
Can I somehow separate the iCloud from my mac while I delete all the pics from my ssd?
How would I do that? Thanks all.

In Photos>Preferences select the general tab, then untick the box next to Importing. then select the icloud tab and untick icloud photos.
Go to photos and delete the photos that you don't want. you can then go back to the icloud tab and re-tick icloud photos. That is what worked for me.
