I visited a friend today who was having difficulty with his Apple TV. I managed to get everything working so that a video could be played from a computer but the sound continued on the computer with no sound on the TV. And yes, the Apple TV was selected (otherwise the video would not have played). It all works well on my own system but can't understand why it will not work on his.

The only information I have been able to get is:
MacBook Pro (early 2011)
OS X10.8.5
He has no information on the Apple TV software.
And yes, streaming from Mac to Apple TV.
He lives more than 60 miles from me, so I have to rely on what he can tell me via email.

-Is he choosing Apple TV in System Preferences... > Sound > Output?
I do know there was a bug in Mountain Lion that affected audio via AirPlay. For some, a restart would fix it. Others said to select the audio output above before starting the AirPlay streaming. Some actually had to type a few Terminal commands to get it to work.
Have your friend check the audio settings and try the "fixes" above and let us know.
