Do I have to prepare my MacBook Pro for upgrading to Sierra?
My initial 4 try's was not successful as I kept getting rejections saying the current version OS X 10.6.8 was not compliant, I have been using this version for years and have had no issues?

Before you can move on up to Sierra you must first update your Mac.

Apple states:

... If your Mac is running OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later, you can upgrade directly to macOS Sierra.

Upgrade to MacOS Sierra

Launch the App Store & see if you can upgrade to El Capitan, if that is an option then you can then upgrade from El Captian to MacOS Sierra

Additionally, assuming you can upgrade your Mac model to Sierra, you also need to insure that any third party applications you use are compatible with OS 10.12.1. You'll need to see if the developer of any such software has upgrades available.
