Need to replace DVR in imac 17"???

Hi, the DVD recorder in my imac G4 17" has always been a bit flaky. Recently I wiped the disc ready for a clean OSX install, but now my DVD player won't boot to my OSX boot disc! The dvd drive is Pioneer DVR-106PE. What shall I do? What replacement DVD drives will work with the firmware? Will I need to find the exact same model? Are there any diagnostics I can run to check the DVD drive I have?

Any help very gratefully received!!!
