This is the latest version of one Action that I have written for Automator, it was written using Xcode 2.1, using the AppleScript template.

Any files passed onto will have an Alias made and placed on the Desktop.

This action was Developed due to a query on the Apple Discussions website.

Any chance of seeing a version of this excellent action that allows the user to specify the alias location? I'd like to be able to place the alias somewhere other than the Desktop.

Thanks for the great work!!!

Hi Rob and Welcome !

Thanks for your kind comments !

Seeing as your the first person to place a comment after 2488 downloads, I shall of course be happy to oblige ! ;-)

I shall knock something up tomorrow night.

I wouldn't quite go that far... ;-)

Here's a Beta version, let me know if it does what you want.

Seems to work okay. I'll submit to Apple later tonight.

Have made the DMG a bit nicer...

An excellent action! It was exactly what I was looking for.

How does it handle situations where there are two files with the same name, but in different subfolders? Looks like it might simply overright the earlier one with the later. Any chance of at least popping up a warning, if not doing the usual "1" thing at the end of the second file's name?

Hi there and welcome !

thanks for you kind comments.

I'll have a look at you suggestions, not sure how practical it would be to implement. But I'll add it to my thinking pile !

hello,

i've been using "make alias" for a while now and very successfully.
for me, it stopped working with leopard, and rather dramatically. it prevents the automator application from functioning: showing actions, play buttons etc.

so i used apple's new "new alias" -- however it doesn't work well enough.
in handling movie files, i have an automator find *.avi and make aliases of all files into ~/Movies.
you 'make alias' did it perfectly.
apple's 'new alias' errors out after about 860 aliases are created.

i'm having a hard time figuring how to parse my command into smaller batches. is there any chance of an update of 'make alias'? or indeed is it malfunctioning for anyone else?

thanks!

A big "me too" on this one. For me, it doesn't accept input, which pretty much kills it.

OTOH, Apple's New Alias worked just fine, creating a few hundred aliases without any trouble.
