using an IMAX . Cant get my startup sequence get past more than half of the progress bar. It does not complete the sequence to the login.It goes dark and repeats the incomplete sequence until I shut it off. Has worked for years. Can't find the error.

Need some information:

1. What exact iMac model do you have?

2. What exact Mac OS are you using?

3. Are you making backups to an external device?

4. Have you ever done any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, from a software perspective?

Now, have you recently done any kind of software upgrade, whether for the Mac OS or for any of your applications?

Try booting up in Safe Mode ... hold the Shift key at the Startup Tone.

If safe booting doesn't work as mentioned above, then you have directory issues.
