Greetings!
I just inherited an older iMac (mid-2010, 27 inch, 3.2 GHZ Intel Core i3) and it is currently running/supported by iOS High Sierra. I have maximum memory (16GB) and was planning to install a new internal SSD drive to speed things up a bit. My question is whether or not iOS Catalina (and newer iOS versions) will be able to run while installed solely on the SSD boot drive? Apple indicates that this Mac will not support either Mojave or Catalina. Is that information strictly based on the original hard drive? Any help or answers are appreciated. Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

The compatibility of OS X/macOS is dependent on the processor family revision, graphics, and other components on the logic board. It won't work by upgrading to an SSD unfortunately. That particular model will only support up to macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra.

Sorry,

C
