All actions very slow. Used Disk Utility and scanned everything on thge iMac and external disks with ClamXav! No problems found. Also use McKeeper and Clean My Mac! What software is available to diagnose both soft and hardware issues. Using OS 10.1.1.

That's a rather old OS (you do mean the first update to the second ever release of OS X?). Also, MacKeeper is REAL, REAL BAD for any Mac.

You need to get rid of MacKeeper ASAP! Here is a link that tells you how to do that:

Disk Utility is OK for diagnosing issues with your disk drive, but you'll need to boot it from an external source for it to do any repairs. TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior are excellent third party products for disk maintenance/repair, but not sure if you can get the early versions of either one that work with OS 10.1.

I goofed! I have OS 10.11.1. Thank you for the information! I did hear that MacKeeper is bad!

OK, given that it is OS 10.11.1, you do have a couple of more choices regarding a more robust disk maintenance/repair programs.

First, again I ask if you have been making any backups at all, to an external device?

Secondly, there should be a Recovery Partition on your internal hard drive. This link tells how to boot to that partition, and what software it contains:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314

Note that one of the "pieces" it has is "
  • Verify and repair connected drives using Disk Utility.
Hopefully, you can use that to verify and repair your primary partition on your internal drive containing the OS, applications, etc.

If that does not work, then you'll need to invest in something like TechTool Pro (http://www.micromat.com), or Disk Warrior (http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/). Either one can help you. I actually have both of them, and they do help me keep my drives "mean and clean". There is some instances where Disk Warrior is "better".
