About a week ago our Imac started shutting down to the point of a dull gray screen with a little colored rotating ball wandering around. This happens after about two hours of inactivity. The only way we can get back to work is to shut down, wait ten or fifteen seconds and restart. Pain in the can! I tried changing the time in Energy saver to 3 hours to no avail.
What can I do to put this problem right?

OS X EL Capitan
10.11.5
3.06 ghz intel core 2 duo
4 GB memory

Hello,

-Which exact model of iMac?
-How much free space is left on the drive?
-What apps are running when this happens?
-Do you have any third-party utilities like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, antivirus running?
-Does the system hang when you are using it, or only after a period of inactivity?
