How to open spaces?

I'd really like to use Mac spaces on my El Cap systems. Works nicely on my MacBook Pro, with either a three finger up-swipe on the trackpad or cntl-up on the keyboard. On my iMac, however, which doesn't have a trackpad, the cntl-up doesn't work. What are other ways to get to spaces and, for that matter, why doesn't cntl-up work?

Well, OK, I did manage to figure out that F9 opens spaces on my iMac. I'm using an old crumbcatcher keyboard, and I know the "up" key on it works, but still ....
