I'm running Sierra 15.4.1 and Safari 18.4 and keep on getting popups that I've visited sites that require me to install McAfee and run a scan.
How can I get rid of them from stopping my browsing?

I take it that you did not install McAfee.

If this is the case then the alerts are a feature of Safari that allows websites to send you notifications.

Here are the steps to get rid of these notification alerts..

1. Open the Safari Settings (Preferences in Monterey or earlier)
2. On top click on Websites.
3. On the left scroll down and select Notifications.
4. Remove everything in the list on the right.
5. Uncheck Allow websites to ask for permissions to send notifications
6. Quit Safari.
7. Restart your Mac.

You should no longer see the alerts.

Thank you MacsBug. I did everything you suggest above. (All the Notifications were marked Deny and none had anything like McAfee in them.) This time I got a message to Scan for viruses from "MacOS Security Center" at dynamichomeproducts.com
Of course I didn't click on it...

Make sure that you follow all of the steps fully and you should no longer get any of these alerts.
I did follow every last one, and double-checked that they all had been (quitting Safari & turning off computer between each check)... I don't get them with Firefox, but it's so huge and seems to be updated every day 😥
