HELP! My MAC will not start

Hi, Can anyone help me, I have a mac book pro 2008, when I go to start up the computer all I get is a grey screen with a folder in the centre with a question mark.

What does this mean?

Very hard to tell over the internet,
Take it to an Apple Service Centre near you.
