Gmail won't let me quit.

Hi Everyone.
I'm new to this site and unfortunately come to it with a problem.
I've had a gmail account for about 8 years and have had no problems at all. I am a light user of email. Just social and family contacts in the main.
However something has happened that it won't allow me to quit the application. I was deleting all the junk mail as I regularly do and went to quit and discovered that the quit option is greyed out and won't let me. Also it won't let me restart or close down my Macbook pro.
I wonder if anyone has had the same problem or if someone has heard of the problem and knows a fix.

Hi,

Go to the apple icon top left of screen and put mouse on it then choose force quit from menu, when box opens mail should be listed force quit it then all should be good.
