In the middle of running a secure secure 7-pass erase on a 2 TB thumbdrive (Pili Dingtian brand) using my 2017 MacBook Air, a family member closed my laptop, interrupting the erase process. When I turned on the laptop again, there was an error message: "the disk you attached was not readable", with the choices to Eject, Ignore or Initialize. When plugged in, it will appear in Disk Utility, but not on the Desktop/in Finder.

In preparing to do the 7-pass erase, I had entered a password for the thumbdrive.

Is there a way to repair whatever happened to the thumb drive? I'm not worried about lost data- it was empty. I just need to get it back to where I can use and encrypt it.

Thanks for your help!

If you "initialize' it and it is available in Disk Utility, you should be able to format it.
