Hi Doc,

You can add columns, by right clicking on one of the column names, but there is no option for folders. I am not sure what a Folders column would do.

The options that are available for the columns are....

What a Folder Column would do: instead of looking at the Path Bar one by one for each file, you would see them all at a glance
That is what it would do: save your time. But if you are a time millionair, then it is uninteresting.

It is a plug in. Is there no free plug in ?
It should not be a plugin, not in the sense of it being an add-on feature. The column view had always been a built-in feature of the Finder as far back as I can remember, which is way back (System 6.0.3). I have found use for it once in a while but hardly ever. In order to get to this view, open a Finder window. Type ⌘-1 and it will display contents in icon view. ⌘-2 gives you list view, and ⌘-3 should be column view. It’s the way it always had been but I came across an article regarding a bug in macOS where column view does not work and just displays a blank second column.

Sorry I can’t recall where I found that article, and the bug never did show up on my system. I hardly ever use any Finder view apart from list view, and now that I’m running either 5.2 or 5.3, I can’t trigger the bug. ⌘-3 still switches to column view with no empty 2nd column as was described in the article.

Speaking of way back, does anyone remember ResEdit? That was how I managed to create an alternate keyboard layout (Dvorak) on the Mac long before it was a feature of MS-DOS. Having been a typographer, typing speed was vital to my work and the Dvorak layout allowed me to hit speeds of around 150 wpm. Honest.

Edit: Couldn’t let it rest and found the article:

So I was not dreaming after all.
