Deleting songs not working?

I'm trying to get rid of stuff on my overstuffed ipod to make room for new songs, but even though I "erase" them from the playlist, the thing doesn't register as having any more room and won't take any new songs. what to do?

The playlist is a link to the songs. You should erase them from the "Music" section, not the playlist.

I think you have to synch it with your iTunes to do so. That's what I do.
