Cursor & typing problems

Hi there. I recently updated my iMac to OS Maverick (10.9.1). Since doing so I have been having some very strange typing problems which seems related to the cursor. essentially what is happening is when i try to edit text and place the cursor in the correct position whatever i type comes in at a different position. generally about 4 or 5 spaces ahead. I have found this happening mainly in Mail, but it also happens when tying into a browser. in fact it is happening as I type this. the only way to avoid it is just to keep typing and delete the whole line if i make a mistake. obviously very annoying.

I've tried restarting my computer a few times and it seems to fix it once but then it started happening again.

would anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this?
