Catalina and how to make it work

All I want to do is to move files from iCloud to my mac hdd or if that is not possible store them on my external drive.

I would actually like to get rid of iCloud altogether I have a lot of large files and the cost of maintaining iCloud is prohibitive.

-How much space are the files taking up in iCloud?
-What types of files are they?
-Could part of the storage issue on iCloud be from iOS device backups and/or iCloud Photo Library?

If your Mac is logged into iCloud, you should see iCloud Drive in the sidebar of a Finder window. You can simply drag the files from there to your Mac's HD or a mounted external HD if you have enough space. Once they are copied, you can delete them from iCloud Drive.
