Cannot find AirDropped PDFs

When I AirDrop a PDF to my iPhone (11, IOS 16.1), from any of my other devices, a message flashes upon the iPhone screen but disappears almost immediately. I am then unable to find where the PDF has gone. It's not in Books, Files, or even Photos. AirDrop a JPG and it goes into Photos, fine.

Does it/did it prompt for AirDrop - Open with... at any point?

It’s possible that the message that flashes up is a prompt, but it disappears so quickly that I’m unable to read any of it. In contrast, when I AirDrop a PDF to my iPad, I’m offered a list of options. I’d be content for PDFs to go automatically into Books, but there seems to be no way to specify that.
