all contacts lost after upgrade to High Sierra

Hello (nice to meet you – I am new here),

I upgraded my MacbookAir to High Sierra, and all my contacts are gone. I use time machine and time capsule but even when I enter time machine and go back to a date before the upgrade, the contacts/addressbook is empty.
No, I do not use iCloud, and therefore I also do not have my contacts on the iphone.

It seems I am not the only one having this problem but I could not find an answer to the problem that does not involve the cloud.

Help would be greatly appreciated,

-Which version of OS X did you upgrade from?
-The Contacts app is completely empty now?
-Do you have the contacts on any other device?
