I tried to use Activity monitor and was told that the version I have does not work with the operating system I am using.
I am running 10.11.3 El Kapitan. The activity monitor is 10.6.
Wouldn't it be nice if upgrades to newer versions of the operating system include the "incidentals" that work with it??

How do I get a newer version of activity manager??

Hello,

Not sure why that is, since El Capitan does replace all system files and utility applications that come with OS X. It should have Activity Monitor version 10.11. The only safe way to get the correct version is to do a reinstall of El Capitan over the top of our current install.

I wonder if this is related to your other issues with your iMac shutting down...is this on the same Mac?

It is on the same mac. There have been a number of issues in the past two weeks but non of the scanners I have downloaded have found anything.

What are the "scanners" you have used? If you mean apps like MacKeeper or CleanMyMac, they could be the root of some of the issues you are experiencing.

N not those things. I am leery of such as that from my years as a windows user, which I still am. I was referring to virus etc scanners.

BTW using spotlight I found 2016 utilities. Unfortunately since there seems to be no way to find out where a file is located in the apple world I cannot locate it except thru spotlight. The utilities sub folder in the applications folder are antique.

When using Spotlight, if you scroll down to the bottom of the list, you will see Show all in Finder... If you click that, a special Finder window will appear that lists all the Spotlight hits in a list, sorted by kind. Before doing that, enable the following in a normal Finder window:

Finder > View > Show Path Bar and Show Status Bar

At the bottom of Finder windows, you will see a breadcrumb trail of the path to a file. When you perform the above Show all in Finder... and you click on the file you are searching for, it will show you where it is located.

Speaking of Activity Manager, I brought it up yesterday and again this morning and find almost 200 activities running. Is there a way to weed out the unnecessary and undesirable??

You know, I've always wondered that myself. I see so, so many tasks running, and I think how many of those are really necessary.

Most of those processes are system ones, some are dependent on others. None can really be quit...most will respawn/restart immediately.

Any in particular you have questions about?
