Spinning wheel of death

My iMac (running version 10.6.8) has stopped working giving only the spinning wheel.

I've tried rebooting it. It takes a long time to turn on, and as each of the applications appear (Finder, Mail, Firefox, Skype), they won't function - just the spinning wheel.

Any suggestions, please?

Sounds like a network issue.

Stop all those Apps launching at startup for a start, and see if the problem persists. Launch then one at a time and see which one is causing the problem. I'm guessing one is going off to try and do an Update.

Thanks for your reply Kaveman.

How do I do that as nothing seems to work on the machine?

Oldscribe: Thank you for your reply.

I've turned on again this morning and all appears to be well. For the moment, therefore, I'll leave it alone and return to this thread if the problem recurs.

That's good news, maybe keep an eye on activity monitor, it may show something.
