Vanishing HD

Hi there,

After playing an avi file using a vlc player (don't think this has any relavance), I noticed that the HD icon had dissappeared from the desktop, so I went to finder prefrences and the box is still ticked to display the hard disk icon on the desktop. I re-started the computer but this has made no difference it was still gone. Please could someone help me i know its petty but its really frustrating me and I can't rest till i find it!
