Hi, i use safari to search th internet and ebay for images to use in my research and hobby.

when i find such i will right click and save as a .jpeg file. now 99% of these files will open exactly as seen in Photoshop, but a small percentage become corrupted when opened in photoshop, but the same images will look normal when opened in Preview.

just curious as to why.?

below is the same file opened in Photoshop, showing corruption, but then the same file opened in Preview appears to be OK.. (I had to reduce the size of my screen shots to upload them here) and below a screen shot of the fuke underlined shoing it generic icon.

just curious as to why photoshop 'mis-reads the file'. regards, Sandy

I would hazard a guess that the file is a WEBP. In most cases, they can act like a JPEG or JPG file. I have even seen WEBP files with the “jpg.webp” extension. If the image from Preview looks okay, try saving it to another format first, e.g. PNG, and then opening that file in Photoshop. Photoshop itself can display unusual behavior, which is the reason why I’m forced to have both PS 2024 and PS 2025 loaded for instances like this.

Hi Tony, thanks for the answer..i have no idea what a webp is, but will look up, and i have no ides about the difference between the 2 photoshops. yes it occasionally get the 'jpeg.webp' extensions, but many of the open normally in photoshop 2025.. i deleted the photoshop 2024 of my imac... had tons of stuff in its folders. and was often seriously low on memory causing problems with other apps.. Especially Topaz ones. now that i am aware of the problems and at least have a work around by opening it in preview and resaving as jpeg to another folder. Regards, Sandy

“webp” is one of numerous image formats, like .jpeg, .jpg, .tiff, etc. They all have advantages and disadvantages, and purposes. With the problem you illustrated, one way to get around the problem is by saving it in a format that you are familiar with, and then trying to open the new file in your preferred app. As for Photoshop, the two (or more) versions might give different results, especially when opening a file created in a newer version with on older version, or vice-versa. I deal with so many PSD (and other Adobe) files that I often come across situations like you originally reported.

If you “deleted” a version of Photoshop, I hope you didn’t just drag the application folder into the trash. Apps usually have numerous associated files outside of the main app folder, and bypassing those can create weird and long-lasting problems. The best way to remove an applications is to use an application cleaner utility like AppCleaner.app, that will collect all those pieces and allow you to delete all of the pieces at once. In the case of Adobe apps, you should use the Adobe Creative Cloud app to select the application in question and select the “uninstall” option.

WOW and double WOW... you are fantastic... i am getting too old for this dam changes in technology... and just memorising everything is getting harder. (starting to realise i may have early Alzheimers also) yes i think i did the un install. But hat that as i have had memories of it doing wierd stuff. and deleting preferences used by both versions once, long ago. i have a folder for "Quick Mats" which gives me 3d looking phot mates around my photos, that was 2 gig alone, and many others, and i have the complete Adobe font library etc. (did part time work for a old hot lead typesetter to earn pocket money) so doubling up on things is a memory space problem... was not a problem is the days of hard disk as i used to have a 2TB internal hard drive and 64gig ram in my old 27" intel imag... but this dam 8 gig all on the chip M1 is a problem. hopefuly apple with get their finger out and up that.. I will be first in the queue. anyway you excellent help and advice is greatly appreciated, and dam fast... (i had the second 512k fat macs in Brisbane 1985, ordered an 128K by by the time it arrived the bigger one also arrived so got that. it cost me $4,500, AUSTRALIAN... a year later $2000 to upgrade to the Big Mac 1meg. wow... my car a Ford Escort only cost $4000.. so have been a mad mac user since then.. i could make System 9 sing.. but am totally overwhelmed by all the modern stuff now... cant keep up with it..) best wishes.

one of the great problems from all of this changes is that archives like digitised libraries will HAVE to keep a working museum of old computer as newer and neer computer ruining more modern software may not be able to keep up with this older technology... (I wrote an article on this ages ago, and got howled down..

I venture to claim seniority but I don’t allow myself to feel “too old.” I started out in the typography business, well before the advent of PCs or Apple computers. At least it began with phototypesetters such as Varityper and Compugraphic machines which created text images onto photographic paper which you then would cut-and-paste onto artboards to create film for plates and “cuts” for offset and letterpress printing. Desktop microcomputers had no real relevance then, just toys. It would be years before PCs would have any relevance for my business. An old friend, the late great John Warnock, urged me to help to develop a link between micro-computers and printable type, and when he finally came out with ATM (aka Adobe Type Manager), the floodgates opened, and the rest was history.

Then in 2001, Apple launched iTunes. It was not an Apple original, but based on SoundJam MP. iTunes turned out to be the best media manager ever, no credit to Apple, and it became my favorite app for not only my music and video collection, but also my book library. A memorable upgrade was the addition of a half-star increment rating to your collection. Very professional. Everything was fine until Apple decided to kill iTunes in favor of their own Books.app and Music.app, two of the silliest programs by Apple. They alphabetized titles including the leading articles (a, an, the) contrary to universal conventions, so, for instance, “A Wonderful Life” would come before “Wild Wild West.” Is that stupid, or is that stupid? And they have done nothing to fix it since they were introduced in 2015. So now, they are touting AI. Apple Intelligence. What Intelligence?

To their credit, though, a few of the Apple apps are fantastic. #1 for me is Numbers.app, even though I had been an Excel user since it originally came out, I remember, on about 15 floppies with a 300-page or so manual. I give credit where it’s due, and not if undeserved. I choose my programs for me, not from some stupid loyalty to big business. Enough rant, for now. My apologies.
