Problem with Handy Cam Mini DV

I'm trying to connect a Sony Handy Cam (Mini DV) and I'm having no luck. I've got a brand new iMac and I'm starting to regret the purchase. Any advice on where to start? When I hook up the USB I would expect to see something happen that tell me the computer has a device connected, nothing happens. The software that came with the camera says for Mac OS X but will not install.
