Mac Pro SSD not upgradeable

Shocked to discover my late 2013 Mac Pro cannot be upgraded from 256gb SSD. Now it is getting full and I have to do something. I propose to add a half terabyte Samsung SSB connected as an external drive. (USB3?) Carbon Copy Clone my Macintosh HD to the Samsung, then forever use the Samsung as the startup disk. Are there any problems I don't foresee?
