Mac Contacts app is hanging when opened

My mac Contacts app hangs up when opened. The menu bar comes up, no windows open and then I get the spinning color wheel. Then I have to force quit it. It's been this way for a few years now. I'm using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OSX 10.12.6; Any help would be appreciated!

A few questions for you:
-You said it has been happening for years, so though multiple versions of OS X/macOS?
-Do you use iCloud to sync your contacts?
-If so, do they work properly on icloud.com and any iOS devices you may have?
-Do you have any other accounts setup that may be syncing contacts like Gmail, Exchange, etc.?
-Do you have any form of Time Machine or other backup of your data before we make any suggestions?

I have both Icloud and Gmail contacts. The spinning wheel problem on IMAC continues to slow down when ever I try to change or add contacts on Mac Catalina 10.15.6 or 1015.7, any clues to speed up the contacts app ?
