help with external hard drive transfer

my 13 month old MacBook decided to die on me -- right before it went out for good, I used an external hard drive to try and transfer my files -- most transferred fine, but a few transferred as file folders and I cannot open them. These are files on my business and I have to have them in order to do next years taxes. Anyone know of a way to get these to open -- I am using a friends PC until my new MacBook arrives. Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Wow that is really not good, such a short space of time, I would have taken it to my nearest Apple store and had words.
When you say you backed up to an external hard drive was this a time machine backup?

Did you purchase extended AppleCare?


Sorry, If those files are less than 4k then they probably didn't copy across.
