Finding unwanted people sharing with my computer...how to get rid of them?

Hi there,

I needed to disconnect my router because it was creating problems surfing the internet. Now I am finding people connected to my computer in the "shared" portion of the hard drive. I have enabled all the firewall, and safety features, no sharing etc (I think!), but am still finding people's computer connected to mine. What am I NOT doing right, is it possible that MY computer is trying to connect to theirs? Any help is greatly appreciated.
