I'm looking to buy a slide scanner online and I've seen one that saves images onto an SD card. It's made in Hong Kong. Apparently the SD card has an inbuilt USB?
I'm wondering whether my OS X 10.6.8 will read the saved jpeg on the SD card?

The specifications on the scanner are as follows:
This Film to Digital Converter features a 2.4" LCD screen, 128MB internal memory and memory card reader to convert 110 & 135 negatives or slides into digital images without a computer. Simply place film into appropriate holder tray, insert it to the Converter, with a push of a button your media will be converted into a 14MP or 22MP JPEG digital image. The Qpix Converter can be connected with your Windows PCs (ME/XP/Vista/7) or Mac computer system to upload saved digital images through USB ports.

PRODUCT FEATURES:

  • Scans 110 & 135 negative and slide to a 14MP or 22MP (interpolation) super high resolution image
  • 128MB internal build-in memory
  • 2.4" colour LCD
  • Unique stand-alone operation no computer or software required to operate
  • Simple tow-step operation
  • High scanning speed
  • Saves images to internal memory or SD/SDHC memory card
  • Video-out to TV connection
  • Compact size
  • Mac and PC compatible

Hello and welcome.

I cannot comment on the quality or value of the scanner itself, as I have never heard of that unit. However, if it outputs JPEG files to SD/SDHC cards, I don't see any reason it wouldn't be compatible. Depending on your Mac model, you may need an external USB SD/SDHC card reader.

Hi,

I tend to agree with Kavemans re compatibility, many friends use the Epson V500 for negative reproductions.

Hi Cory I really appreciated your reply. Not sure what a USB SD/SDHC card reader is. My iMac model is: A1173 and has three USB ports, I think I purchased it in 2008. It is one of the white polyplastic casing or whatever the correct term is, yeh I know it's about time I updated but unfortunately I have a mortgage so it will have to do for a little while longer. Regards John

Not a problem.

A USB SD/SDHC card reader is simply a device that connects to your iMac, which has a slot to insert the SD or SDHC cards in. The cards then mount on your Mac's desktop like a CD does, so you can import the photos from the card.

three pre-requisites are present:
  • output > jpg
  • connectivity > USB
  • platform > Mac
aside from doing further research into the product yourself for peace of mind (e.g.: contacting the seller) I cannot foresee any issues.

I guess you're right, yes I have contacted the seller but his English isn't 100%.

I buy such items from PC Case Gear which is an Australian online company.

I did a search for a USB SD/SDHC card reader and found 4 ranging from $9 - $19, just check for Mac OS X compatibility but most are cross-platform so you shouldn't have any concerns there.

USB SD/SDHC Card Readers

You could also buy them from Dick Smith Electronics, JB Hi Fi for example.
