Applications quit when printing

I have a problem with my Mac communication with my printer. Every time I try to print, the application I am printing from quits (whatever the application) when I go into the print centre the jobs have stopped. This happened progressively with my old printer so I bought a new one and it still happens. Also, I've tried to install 10.4 to solve the problem, but it won't install (it goes thru the process then says "there were problems with the installation") It's a G4 running 10.2.8 currently. Any ideas?
