Slow Video Streaming on Macbook Pro

I have a Macbook Pro OS X with Snow Leopard on it. When I first got it, it buffered videos at a super fast speed. Now it takes just as long(maybe a tad shorter) as my desktop with Windows XP. I know it's hard for Macs to get viruses but how would I be able to find out? Please don't just give a link to a site. I'm new to Mac and need as much information as possible.
