Connecting two iMacs via Thunderbolt

I have a 2012 iMac which I would like to use as a second monitor (connecting to a new 2020 iMac, but when I connect the two with a thunderbolt cable, the Command F2 feature does not work to engage them. Suggestions?

Here are the requirements for target display mode: Use your iMac as a display with target display mode

I don't believe it will work with your setup, since the 2020 iMac is newer than what is stated in the article.
