Hello,

No, there isn't any way to do that. However, you could create a Standard (non-Admin) user for them to use, and set the Mac to login automatically to it instead of your account. If you only startup from the external, then you do not have to give it to them, as they can startup from the internal drive if it is setup, or their own external testing drive, which they should have.

Is the internal drive blank, not setup, or defective?

Does that help?

c,
thanks very much for the option.... the point was to not let them have the external at all, indian support here so far has been abysmal and they are not very accountable, the internal hard drive is a sort of repository, keeps el cap running a bit leaner, for movies, audiobooks books ...cleaned, loaded a copy of sierra and will clean and restore files from backup when its returned .........not much going on with sierra is there.......siri reminds me of the old crank to play record players.......
