Where is contact Information Stored?

When upgrading to El Captain on my macbook Pro i lost all of the contact information and I do not know where it is stored.
An=lso where is the email data stored?
All advice appreciated.

-Are your contacts and email not showing in the Contacts and Mail applications after the upgrade?
-Is this an iCloud or other email account?

I Lost some a lot of emails in the Email Applications and Lost the lot of Contacts in the application.
I recovered email address into contacts. How I did that I am not sure now but all I got was Email addresses, all names , addresses phone numbers lost.
No Icloud or other account

If I knew where it was stored maybe I can recover from a backup/
