What is this weird symbol for?

On my macbook, the top left key (just under the ESC key) is '§'. That's in a really handy position, so I'm assuming it's really important to someone, but I can't even find any reference to it in a google search - what is it / what's it used for?

What is the Meaning of §?​

§ is known as a “section mark” and is used to indicate a new section, particularly in legal documents. It can also be used to indicate a footnote after an asterisk and single and double daggers have been used.

Just curious. What model is your MacBook, and what country/origin? I have worked on numerous MacBooks, well, Macs with built-in keyboards in general, and I don’t recall seeing any one having the § key anywhere on the keyboard.

Last time that I have seen that is on a UK keyboard. US keyboards have a tilde in that location.
