Hi,

Running Mojave on a desktop Mac.
Using MAIL, the mail app that came with it for eMail.

Usually, an embedded photo that someone sent us opens up fine.

But after that, upon re-opening, most of the time it doesn't; just
disappears and in its place, now, we often see e.g.:

<IMG_9249.JPG>

What, exactly, is this please ?

Any way of re-opening the original photo via this, somehow ?

Thanks for all the previous help.
Stay well,
Bob

The numbers were just an example for the Post showing what
is typical. 9249 has no significance.

Hello,

Macs display most photos/attachments inline in the body of the email. There is a setting in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > click on your account > Account Information > Download Attachments:. It can be set to All, Recent, or None. Check that setting.

You could also try moving your cursor around in the header of the email and you should see tools appear. You can then try to click the paper clip to download any attached photos/documents:

Also, it could be a linked photo from a website or other online storage location. If that file is moved/removed, it could change to a placeholder for the image.
