Yesterday I installed the latest IOS update on my Mac, when it finished and I logged in I noticed that the IOS had reverted to Mojave when I had already installed Catalina. The machine appears to have gone back to what the system was in May this year, when I did the last full back up.

Is there a way to to reverse this? Without rebuilding the whole machine?

Hello and welcome.

Personally, I haven't ever seen macOS revert back to a previous version on its own.

-Do you know which version of Catalina you were running?
-What update did you install?
-Your last Time Machine backup was in May 2020?
-Were you attempting to restore files from your Time Machine backup?

If you can give a bit more information, we can try to determine what may have happened.

It was the latest Catalina I had, the update was the one that came out in the last few days, all details of both these things are unavailable as they were on the system and have now gone!I was not attempting to restore a time machine point.
I am now trying to rebuild what had been lost, just spending a few hours installing Catalina.
