Of course, you need to be running at least OS 10.6 to use it.

I think you mean "uncheck Empty Trash Securely", but yes, have that as a Finder Preference will make emptying the trash a slower process. But, unless one changes it, typically that option is not checked with any OS installation or upgrade. Also, even with that option unchecked, if one puts a lot of items into the trash before emptying it, then emptying the trash the "normal" way will take some time. That is where Trash It! comes in handy.
