Text tone only works intermittently

When I receive a text in Messages, often the text tone doesn't sound. I only find out about the text when I see the badge on the Messages app. Is there a setting I need to change? Can you tell me how to change the settings for the Messages app?

I have this issue intermittently as well, but I am running an iPhone 6s with iOS 15.7.9.
