text edit entering favorites and keyboard

I cant't get favorites to enter various glifs such as math symbols. In addition, the keyboard selection seems to be necessary.

I am trying to enter a symbol, e.g., a square root sign, from favorites. I bring up favortes which shows the signs I need and have not been able to find how the select such signs and get them transfered to my text block.
