Anybody have a theory on this?

I just did SuperDuper Smart Update backup to an external drive. It took an hour.

Then, before doing anything at all on the Mac...

I did the very same SuperDuper Smart Update backup to a 2nd external drive. This took ten minutes.

Both of the external drives were updated by this method yesterday, so they should have been identical to each other.

Both drives connected via Firewire.

Same data. One backup took an hour. The other backup took ten minutes.

I'll repeat the experiment tomorrow.

Although I use SuperDuper regularly I am not familiar with its inner workings :) .
Could it be that some of the data for the backup is cached? If so that could account for some of the speed increase.
Just thinking out loud.

Ah, cached, hadn't thought of that. Seems a reasonable theory. I'll do the experiment again today, paying closer attention. I should find the log file, that might help.

Maybe ask David Nanian ((e-mail address removed)) He may be able to shed some light on the matter.
