It would be very good if all posts started with Mac model, year and operating system. It seems in most posts that someone has to ask.

Great suggestion. To make it really easy, all of that information is one click away—from  -> About This Mac. The amount of RAM is also important. Serial number optional ;).

It depends on the question raised but In principal, yes. The type, size and free space on the internal drive plus info on any attached devices might also be useful. Serial number - no!

Hi,

Agreed, but not required. It does depend on the issue, but for most, it is helpful and will be asked. ;)

Definitely no need to post things like serial numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, etc. But, the serial number can be used to determine the exact model on Apple's Check Your Service and Support Coverage page, which is helpful if the Mac will not startup. That will at least give a baseline configuration of the Mac to help with troubleshooting.

The mention of the serial number was a snark, by the way, as indicated by the smiley. And in principle, if the issue is related to storage, information regarding drive size, type, free space, as well as connected (external) drives including Time Machine volume(s).
