Sound icon grey out after upgrading to Yosemite

After upgrading to Yosemite on mac mini the sound icon greys out but I have sound. Unplugging the stereo jack and plugging it back in works to un grey the sound icon but the sound is muddy. Also switching inputs on my monitor will cause grey out. Hoping I don't have to re install. Any suggestions?

I have a Mac Mini, and upgraded to Yosemite yesterday. I am not having any issues. By sound icon, do you mean the one at the right center of the top menu, just to the left of the Day/Date/Time? It looks like a speaker. Mine is fine, and I can adjust it.

Possibly reset the PRAM.
