Did the same to my wife's aging MacBook Pro: added an SSD from Otherworld Computing and maxed out the ram to 8GB. It was fine for a while but she is tremendously impatient so I ended up getting her a new M1 iMac. The MacBook still works fine but we archived it to the closet for emergencies 
It was 11 years old so that's pretty good I think.
