SD mp4 video to iPad

My car has an SD card to capture video and uses mp4 format. I want to download the video to my iPad simply for storage and edited later. Can this be done? I've tried using a lightning cable with SD reader but it only opens to Photos, shows me IMPORT but nothing is there. Can this be done? Is that possible, if so how can I accomplish this?
