routine java software upgrade led to crash

I was installing latest java software when the attached symbol appeared - a circle with a diagonal line. I can force shutdown and re-start, log in but then symbol reappears. What does it mean? How do I fix it?

It's times like this I wish I had recorded all the details safely!
It's a 2012 macbook pro
I had recently upgraded to High Sierra (10.13 I think?)
No idea what version of Java was being installed - I had just followed the prompt to upgrade
