Reformat external hard drive

My external Hard Drive has never mounted on my Mac (G4 10.5 leopard) it mounts ok on a windows PC.
I want to re-format it for the Mac so what should i set it to.

If it's only for the Mac then Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if you want to share it with the PC then MS-DOS (FAT) but there could be file size limits with transfers with MS-DOS ... I'm not entirely sure these days, I'm talking transfers of large files over 4 GB I mean.

Format done finally, although i have to plug it directly into back of computer, it doesn't mount through the usb hub.
