Hello and welcome.

Adding more RAM won't make a noticeable speed difference. Additional RAM is really only a benefit for opening multiple applications simultaneously.

There are a lot of other things that can cause slowness and long startup times:
-Not enough free hard drive space
-Applications and software loading and opening at startup
-Utilities like MacKeeper, antivirus, etc. than are constantly scanning every file that is in use
-Which version of OS X/macOS are you running?

We'll see if we can determine what is causing the issue.

It may be useful to open up the activity monitor to see what is running.
When I got my imac it had 8gb fitted I upped that to 24gb, and as Cory said the speed difference was hardly perceptible, but it was a real help as I often have multiple applications running.
